Dedicated to the memory of Theo

Theodore Yiqi(奕祺) Frederick Dyson was due to be born on the 24th August 2019.
Everything was going perfectly fine, until it wasn't. There was no reason for his passing, apart from it was an unfortunate act of nature.

Although Theo's life was very brief but he accomplished quite a few amazing achievements:
*On the 1st April, it was annouced to us that Theo would most likely to pass away in the next 48 hours, but he lived and fought for another 11 days!
*At just nearly 21 weeks, Theo was born alive, healthy and strong, which is very rare to see medically.
*He weighed 350g/ 12 ounces, and measured 25cm/ 9.84 inches.
*His tiny little heart beat strongly through his ribs under his almost transparent skin.
*He was cuddled and held throughout his short life by us.
*He responded to the our voices, when we called his name.
*His nose was so like his daddy’s and his sister’s, and his long hands and feet was just like mummy’s, indicating just how tall he was going to be.
*Theo was alive for 2 hours and 9 minutes, but he lived across 2 days- His birthday is on the 11th April, and he passed away on the 12th.
*It is rare for a baby under 24 weeks to be given a birth certificate, but as Theo did the almost impossible, he breathed and lived, he was given a birth certificate.

To accept we lost our son was the most difficult we've ever done in our lives. Although we had 11 days to come to term about this possibility, we also hopefully imagined that I could carry him to 24 weeks, 27 weeks, or even 32 weeks, as he was such a fighter. We will never forget that night, that moment, when we realised all our hope were taken away. We never celebrated Theo's birth, because we knew the time we said Hi was the time to say Bye. Theo couldn't cry, but he surely heard the cry with the deepest despair and grief.

The doctors, midwifes and bereavement team in Jessop's did an amazing job in looking after us in the darkest hours of our lives. We were able to stay in the Bereavement Suite with Theo for 3 nights. Theo had his special cot that could keep him cool, and for sometime, it almost felt like we had a baby, who was just simply too well behaved and quiet.
During our stay, midwifes helped us to complete Theo's hands and feet print, they weighed him and measured him, they helped us to dress him in the clothes we chose, and they presented us with the memory box from "4Louis" and information pack from SANDS. Doctors answered our millions of questions again and again. A theatre photographer was arranged to take some precious photos for us as a family, one of which was El holding her baby brother. As a team, they gave us all the time, space and support we could've hoped for, which made all the difference in the world.
It was also during the stay in the Bereavement Unit that we started to register the fact we would never have a 'come home baby'. With the comfort of still having him around us, we were able to start our funeral planning.

No one would or should ever plan for their babies' death, so when things happen, the services and charities that are already in place helped us to preserve priceless memories. To express our gratitude, we are raising money for "4Louis", and the Bereavement Unit of Jessop Wing. We sincerely hope no one ever needs to go through what we've been through, but should they unfortunately be there, we hope they'd have all the chances to make memories as we did.

To our little fighter Theo, we love you so much, and miss you every day. You will always be part of our lives!

Love, mummy and daddy. xxx
